Expert Advisor Optimization Tips for the RSI Trendline EA

Please note that these tips are given to traders who have a good general knowledge of EA optimisation. EA optimisation and calibration is an extensive Forex trading skill that take time to develop. We do only offer basic guidance in this area. There are some video and posts in the Forum which may provide additional information.

Overview

The EA is a relatively simple EA to optimize as it does not have main main inputs. The image below shows the 5 main inputs that impact profitability. The ranges of the input items are not that big either.

It is important to optimize a good selection of currency crosses as well as a good selection of time frames to get an overall view of potential profitability.

The MT4 Strategy Tester is a good optimization tool but you can use any other tools you have experience with.

The image below also suggests the initial Start Step and Stop levels for testing. You can change these according to your optimisation results you achieve.

Important to note that decisions when using this Ea are made on the closed candle. That means that the "Open Prices" optimization technique gives the same results as the "Every Tick" technique- Unless the Following stop option is used. Then the final results need to be done on a every tick basis.

Important Optimisation point

We have found that when you remove the target altogether and use an optimised following stop the results can be considerably better. Do this as part of your optimisation process,

Optimisation tips

  1. Make sure that you only accept optimization results for the RSI Overbought and oversold input where the reading add up to 100. If you don't the results will have a buy / sell bias.
  2. The above point applies to the RSI Trigger Area input.
  3. You can do the entire optimization at once which may take 2 or 3 hours. Alternatively you can do the optimisation on a piecemeal basis - this will result in you getting 90% results in 30 minutes or so.
  4. The suggested order of optimization when doing piecemeal optimisation is:-  If using the set files to start with do number 1 in the image first. Then 2, 3 and 4 next one by one.
